What is the best way to go about laying down laminate flooring?

By
laminate flooring

We are going to be replacing the old laminate flooring in our house but underneath what is already there is uneven wood flooring. We don’t want to refinish those floors right now. Is there some type of pad that can be put under the laminate before it is put down to help with this a little?

It depends on how serious the “unlevel” condition is. First off, most laminate calls for a pad to placed under the flooring, but this really doesn’t help with an varied surface.

Level ling compounds can be used to level low spots. An aggressive grit sander can take down high spots.

If the problem is widespread and serious, the best option may be to cover the entire floor with 1/2″ plywood. Stagger the joints to avoid long continuous joints. The new plywood will be stiff enough to bridge most unevenness and will provide the necessary even surface to install your new laminate.

hello, assuming your floors are level which im guessing they are, lay your underlay down first, then its usually best to start in the furthest corner away from the door, start by laying one piece then run in that row and just keep repeating, i always like to cut the ends at different lenghts so the joints get staggered so you don’t end up with loads of lines running down the room and remember to always leave a 10mm gap around the whole of the room(between the skirting and floor) to allow for expansion and contraction although this doesn’t happen that much as the wood is man made and has a low moisture content if you want a real nice job take all your skirting’s off then replace after although most of my customers who do this put new back on how ever a beading (called quadrant) will servise to cover the 10mm gap, the 10mm gap is very important as i promise you the flooring with warp and get raised up in the centre of the room, hope this helps

There is an underlayment that you have to put under laminate. It comes in a 50′ roll and you have to put that on the subfloor before you put the new laminate down. Othervise moisture will destroy the laminate. Its basically compressed fiber…something rather material with a picture laminated to the top of it.
