What kinds of pre-existing flooring can laminate flooring be installed over?

By
laminate flooring

I have a family room with ceramic tile under carpet (not my doing) and I am thinking about laminate flooring there
I will remove the carpet and padding, just wondered about the tile as it would be a lot of work to get that up and then a new subfloor

You definitely need to take up the old carpet and pad. Laminate requires padding but it is a completely different type of padding than carpet. If you don’t remove the carpet and or pad you will have way too much cushin under your laminate and when walked on the tongue and grove locking joints will break. Laminate padding is much thinner and much more dense than carpet padding. It would be ideal if you removed the tile, however, it is not always necessary. If you install over tile, the tile needs to be in sound condition with no broken or loose tiles and it needs to be very flat. Also make sure you use a premium laminate padding.
