whats the best way to strip wallpaper off plasterboard walls?
Bywe can’t soak the paper (which is anaglypta) as the water will ruin the board. have managed to get the top layer off but the liner underneath is still there, can we paint over this or does it need to be relined?

A little moisture won’t do damage. Use a steamer, or you can get a chemical spray stripper from B&Q.

you can use steam because the moisture will not ruin the board as its not wet enough…..use this method in my last house with no problems at all.
Yes you can paint the liner but you’ll find the paint is heavy when dry and will make the liner crumble and come off.

Either get a good steamer or follow the more complex method below:

There is special spray you can use to get it off its kinda smells like bleach but im not sure what its called… Otherwise, you should use a steamer.

I’m trying to get wallpaper off, too. I’m using a “paper tiger”
it has little teeth that score the surface of the paper, then I spray with a get wallpaper remover we got at Lowe’s.
Then I scraper carefully with a 5 in 1 tool. The top layer loosens then I can peel it but the paper under neath is sticking, so I have to repeat the process. It’s coming off, and as long as I am careful, I am not ruining the wallboard underneath. I plan to paint a layer of sizing, then re wallpaper,
so a few little pin mark holes are okay for me. Good Luck!
This is a messy job, right?

dont paint over the backing paper as it is never even and there is a risk that it will come away when the paint soaks into it
instead use a stripper and dont worry ,it wont damage the plaster board

We used a steamer, but be gentle. You may need to fill after. We didn’t re-line either but our house is 40 years old and the plasterboard may be a bit more solid than newer houses.

hire a steam stripper, put it in the middle of the room close all doors and windows and leave it to fill the room with steam for around an hour, after that the paper should come of very easy
